Diabetes mellitus is closely linked to progressive kidney dysfunction. Assessing kidney function using estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) alongside the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) may improve early risk stratification. This 2024 cross-sectional study examined the association between AIP and kidney function in 30 diabetic patients in Manado City, North Sulawesi. AIP was calculated from triglyceride and HDL-C levels, while kidney function was assessed using eGFR and renal biochemical markers. The analysis revealed a strong negative correlation between AIP and eGFR (Spearman rho = -0.717, p < 0.001) and a positive correlation with creatinine. Furthermore, robust linear regression adjusted for age, sex, and diabetes duration confirmed that higher AIP remained significantly associated with lower eGFR (p < 0.001). These findings support the potential value of AIP as a simple lipid-derived marker to complement kidney function assessment in diabetic patients.
